Fans Horizon walking track
Area: Pincham & Grand High Tops
Guide updated · Park conditions, track status, heat and fire danger, camping availabilit…
Short but steep climb from Pincham carpark to Balgatan lookout. NPWS: 3.6 km return, Grade 3, 1.5–2.5 hours, more than 1000 steps. Best first-walk taste of the volcanic skyline from the same trailhead as the Breadknife.
Do not pair: Do not add the Breadknife loop “because we are already at Pincham” unless that was the planned Grade 4 day.
Turnaround: The lookout is the product. Return the same way. Leave daylight and knees for 1000+ steps down.
- Calling it “easy because it is short” — 3.6 km with 1000+ steps is still work in heat.
- Inventing a link onto Grand High Tops without Grade 4 kit, water or a Trip Intention.
Official NSW NPWS pages and the sign in front of you override any guide page.
- Grade 3 — moderate fitness; short but steep (NPWS)
- 1 hour 30 min – 2 hours 30 min suggested (NPWS)
- 3.6 km return (NPWS)
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: First visits, time-poor walkers and mixed groups who want Breadknife / Belougery Spire / Crater Bluff views without a six-hour ridge

Where you start
Pincham carpark
Same sealed carpark as the Breadknife and Grand High Tops walk, near Camp Pincham and the Visitor Centre. Confirm facilities and alerts on the day.
How to get there
- Self-drive via sealed John Renshaw Parkway. Pincham is just past the Visitor Centre turn-off. 2WD suitable.
- Vehicle day entry $8 per vehicle — [VERIFY] live. Pedestrians/cyclists free.
- Pick up a free walking map at the Visitor Centre if it is open on your way in.
How to do it (step by step)
- Check local alerts. Carry water, hat, SPF and sturdy shoes — 1000+ steps is still work.
- Follow the signed Fans Horizon track as it climbs steeply through eucalypt forest to the sandstone cliffs of Balgatan Mountain.
- At the lookout, rest, photograph the Breadknife / Belougery Spire / Crater Bluff skyline, then return the same way.
- Do not invent a link onto the Breadknife loop unless that was the planned Grade 4 day with full kit.
What to expect
Fans Horizon is the honest first walk: short on kilometres, long on steps. NPWS (re-checked 2026-08-15): 3.6 km return, Grade 3, 1.5–2.5 hours, no wheelchair access. After 1.8 km and more than 1000 steps you reach Balgatan lookout on exposed sandstone cliffs with some of the park’s best views of the Breadknife, Belougery Spire and Crater Bluff.
It is the right product when the group is time-poor, mixed in fitness, or not ready to commit to a 14.5 km Grade 4 loop. It is the wrong product if someone expected a flat sealed path — that is Whitegum Lookout.
Spring is the sweet-spot season for flowers and milder air. Summer still works with an early start and real water. The lookout is exposed; wind and sun are part of the deal.
Logistics
Start at Pincham carpark — toilets when open, sealed access, same vehicle fee as every other motor-vehicle visit. The Visitor Centre is minutes away for maps and advice when open (9am–4pm, closed Christmas Day — [VERIFY]).
Carry drinking water, hat, sunscreen, sturdy shoes and a layer. This is not a “leave the bottles in the car” walk. Limited reception still applies.
Return the way you came. There is no prize for continuing toward High Tops without the Breadknife plan, the water and the daylight.
Hazards
The step count is the story. Knees and unfit guests fail on the way down more often than on the way up. Take the descent slowly. Rest in shade where it exists.
Heat, sun and empty bottles still apply on a “short” walk. The lookout has little shelter. Post-2013 trees can drop limbs in wind — do not picnic under large trees.
No major water crossings, no tides, no crocs. Fire danger still applies in season.
Reverse and when to upgrade
Reverse is the same 1000+ steps down. Leave daylight and knee budget for it. A lookout sit that runs long is how people descend in poor light.
Upgrade to the Breadknife only on a different day, or on this day only if that was always Plan A, the group is Grade 4-ready, and you have full-day water. Do not “see how we go” past the Fans junction on a half-bottle.
If anyone is cooked at the first steep pitch, reverse immediately. Whitegum Lookout remains a dignified Plan C.
Packing baseline
Drinking water for every adult, hat, SPF, sturdy shoes with grip, a layer for the exposed lookout, snacks. This is not a “leave the bottles in the car” walk even at 3.6 km. Poles help some people on the 1000+ steps down.
Agree a reverse time at the car. A long sit on Balgatan is how groups descend in poor light or heat. Screenshot local alerts in Coonabarabran — limited reception is official.
Pairing
Classic first-visit day: Visitor Centre → Fans Horizon → optional Whitegum if energy remains. Do not add the Breadknife loop on the same water and the same afternoon.
Printable skeleton: first-visit Fans Horizon itinerary. If the group is already Grade 4-ready and this was never the plan, use the Breadknife day itinerary instead — do not convert mid-walk.

Extra tips
- Best first Warrumbungle walk for most groups — honest views, honest effort, same carpark as the flagship.
- Spring wildflowers: flannel flowers, native indigo, blue trumpets and orchids in official notes.
- Watch for lizards, crimson rosellas, yellow robins and bronzewings on the descent.
- Pair with Whitegum Lookout the same day only if energy remains — stairs plus another stop still need water.
Often paired with Breadknife / GHT— only if energy and weather allow.

Fans Horizon FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Fans Horizon easier than the Breadknife?
Shorter, yes. Easy, no. Official: 3.6 km return, Grade 3, 1.5–2.5 hours, more than 1000 steps, no wheelchair access. Whitegum Lookout is the sealed easy product.
Can we continue onto the Breadknife from Fans Horizon?
Not as a surprise. Same Pincham start does not make them one walk. Upgrade only if that was always Plan A, the group is Grade 4-ready, and you have full-day water and daylight.
Where do we park?
Pincham carpark, just past the Visitor Centre turn-off on John Renshaw Parkway. Vehicle day entry applies ([VERIFY] $8). Toilets when open. Same carpark as the Breadknife.
