Breadknife and Grand High Tops walk

Area: Pincham & Grand High Tops

Flagship Warrumbungle day walk from Pincham carpark. NPWS lists 14.5 km loop, Grade 4, 5–6 hours. Spirey Creek to Spirey Ramp (many steps) past the Breadknife, then High Tops camps and a West Spirey return. No drinking water on track. Trip Intention and free PLB hire recommended.

Do not pair: Do not stack Bluff Mountain, Mount Exmouth or a Dark Sky night-shoot onto a first Breadknife day from the same legs.

Turnaround: Agree a clock at Pincham. If you are not past the Breadknife with a real water reserve, reverse or take Dagda Shortcut — the summit is not worth a headlamp descent.

  • Heat with too little water — summer often >30 °C; park record 42.6 °C; no drinking water on track.
  • Starting late and finishing the High Tops in poor light with no reception to call 000.

Official NSW NPWS pages and the sign in front of you override any guide page.

  • Grade 4 — bushwalking experience recommended (NPWS; re-check open status)
  • 5–6 hours suggested (NPWS) — allow more for photos, heat or a slower group
  • 14.5 km loop (NPWS); 12.5 km return via Dagda Shortcut
  • Effort: hard
  • Best for: Fit walkers with bushwalking experience who want close views of the Breadknife, Belougery Spire, Crater Bluff and the Grand High Tops panorama

Distance, grade, time and open/closed status change — verify on NSW National Parks (nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/warrumbungle-national-park) and local alerts before you go.

Where you start

Pincham carpark

NPWS: the walk starts from Pincham carpark south of John Renshaw Parkway, just past the Visitor Centre turn-off. Toilets at the carpark when open. Confirm signed trackheads and local alerts the morning you leave.

How to get there

  1. Self-drive only — no useful public transport to the park. Sealed John Renshaw Parkway. From Coonabarabran about 35 km west via Timor Road / the parkway.
  2. Visitor Centre is ~300 m off the parkway (4261 John Renshaw Parkway). Pincham carpark is just past that turn-off. 2WD suitable on the sealed main access.
  3. Vehicle day entry $8 per vehicle per day (motorbikes included) as published — [VERIFY] live. Pedestrians/cyclists free. Annual passes cover vehicle entry only, never camping.
  4. Call at the Visitor Centre (02 6825 4364, 9am–4pm daily, closed Christmas Day — [VERIFY]) for a free map, Trip Intention Form and free PLB hire before you start.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Check local alerts and the official Breadknife page the morning you leave. Screenshot notes on town Wi-Fi.
  2. Fill a Trip Intention Form and hire a free PLB at the Visitor Centre for this walk.
  3. Start at Pincham with 2–3+ L water each, hat, SPF, sturdy shoes, layers, first aid, offline maps and Emergency+.
  4. Walk only signed tracks. Budget the full 5–6 hours plus photo time. Agree a hard turnaround before you leave the car.
  5. If overnighting at Balor Hut, Ogma Gap or Dows, book in advance via official NPWS camping only.

What to expect

This is the walk people mean when they say they did the Warrumbungles. NPWS calls it one of the best walks in NSW: close encounters with the Breadknife dyke, Belougery Spire, Bress Peak and Crater Bluff, then the Grand High Tops summit panorama. Official figures (re-checked 2026-08-15): 14.5 km loop, Grade 4, 5–6 hours. Park entry fees apply.

It is not a lookout stroll. Spirey Ramp is a long stepped climb. The path is rocky and uneven. Shade thins as you gain the High Tops. Heat, empty bottles and a late start are the usual failure modes — not “we couldn’t find the Breadknife.”

Spring wildflowers along Spirey Creek are a genuine extra, not a reason to under-pack water. Crowds peak on school holidays, Easter and long weekends at Pincham. Midweek outside holidays is quieter. This is still a popular walk — start early either way.

Day shape

Official loop shape: Pincham → Spirey Creek (shaded, spring flowers) → steep climb via Spirey Ramp (many steps) past the base of the Breadknife → close views of Belougery Spire, Bress Peak and Crater Bluff → Balor Hut campground (rest / picnic; book if overnighting) → Grand High Tops summit → Western High Tops / Ogma Gap → Dows Camp (Bluff Mountain views) → West Spirey track back to Pincham.

Shorter option: 12.5 km return via Dagda Shortcut — still a real Grade 4 day, just less western ridge. Say the option out loud at Balor Hut before legs decide for you.

A realistic clock from Coonabarabran: Visitor Centre at opening or soon after, walking by mid-morning, summit lunch, reverse with daylight for the drive out. Winter days are short; summer heat argues for an earlier start, not a later one.

Logistics

Start/finish: Pincham carpark, sealed, toilets when open. Vehicle $8 day entry ([VERIFY]) is separate from any camp booking. No separate walking permit for the standard day walk.

No drinking water on track. Carry 2–3+ L per person; more in heat. Hat, sunscreen, sturdy shoes, layers. Fuel stove culture if overnighting — [VERIFY] fire rules. Generators are not a High Tops product.

Communications: limited reception throughout the park (official). Trip Intention Form strongly recommended (Visitor Centre or online). Free PLB hire at the Visitor Centre. Install Emergency+ before you lose bars. Leave intentions with a reliable human and a reverse window.

Overnights at Balor Hut, Ogma Gap or Dows must be booked in advance. Walk-in does not mean freestyle. Group sites and Balor Hut can have extra key-collection rules from the Visitor Centre — [VERIFY] the live campground page.

Hazards that actually matter

Heat is the primary medical risk in the warmer months. Official visitor info: summer often exceeds 30 °C; highest recorded 42.6 °C. There is no tap on the ridge. Turn around if someone stops drinking or shows heat illness — the summit is optional.

Terrain: steep steps, loose rock, uneven path, exposure on the High Tops. Grip shoes matter. Poles help some walkers on the descent.

Trees: the 2013 fire affected most of the park. Official safety language: trees may fall without warning or drop branches. Do not sit, stand or camp under large trees or overhanging limbs in wind or rain. Coonabarabran Area office 02 6842 1311 for tree-safety notes.

Reception: you cannot call 000 without coverage. A PLB is the honest backup for a Grade 4 remote-feel day. Winter nights off-track or after a late finish can drop toward freezing (record −9 °C).

There are no crocodiles, no tides and no major water crossings on this main walk. Do not import coastal hazard language. Fire danger and total fire bans still apply.

Reverse and bail-outs

Turn back the same way at any point — that is a successful shorter day, not a failure. The Breadknife base and early High Tops views already beat a stretcher.

Dagda Shortcut: the official shorter 12.5 km return to Pincham if the western loop (Ogma / Dows / West Spirey) is too much once you are up.

Fans Horizon: if the group is not Grade 4-ready at Pincham, do not start the Breadknife “to see how we go.” Walk Fans Horizon instead from the same carpark.

Injury or weather on the ridge: stay on signed tracks, use the PLB if you cannot self-rescue, and do not invent off-track descents around the Breadknife. Climbing on the Breadknife itself has historically been restricted — [VERIFY] current climbing / registration rules at the Visitor Centre; this page is a walking guide, not a climbing topo.

Vehicle recovery is back along John Renshaw Parkway to Coonabarabran. Do not assume hitch-hiking or a phone bar at the carpark.

Pairing and the next day

This walk is the whole day. Do not add Bluff Mountain, Mount Exmouth or a midnight Dark Sky shoot. A Coonabarabran bed or booked Camp Blackman is the honest recovery. Fans Horizon is the Plan B from the same carpark if the group is not Grade 4-ready at the car.

Extra tips

  • Spring (especially September–November) brings wildflowers on Spirey Creek — purple hoveas, wattles, pea flowers in official notes.
  • Look for wedge-tailed eagles and listen for peregrine falcons. Do not feed wildlife.
  • Dagda Shortcut cuts the day to about 12.5 km return if the full western loop is too much.
  • Fans Horizon from the same carpark is the honest Plan B if the group is not Grade 4-ready at the car.
  • This is Gamilaraay / Weilwan / Wiradjuri Country — stay on track and respect cultural places.
  • Pair with a Coonabarabran night or Camp Blackman for an early start and a shower after.

Often paired with Fans Horizon— only if energy and weather allow.

Breadknife / GHT FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Is Breadknife & Grand High Tops a first-visit walk?

Only if the group is already used to steep Grade 4 days. Most first-timers should walk Fans Horizon from the same Pincham carpark. Treat the Breadknife as a planned fit day, not a “see how we go” add-on.

Do I need a walking permit?

The standard day walk does not need a separate permit beyond vehicle day entry ([VERIFY] $8). A Trip Intention Form is strongly recommended. Free PLB hire is at the Visitor Centre. Overnight High Tops camps need an official NPWS booking.

What is Dagda Shortcut?

The official shorter return — about 12.5 km instead of the 14.5 km western loop. Still Grade 4. Use it if Ogma / Dows / West Spirey is too much once you are up. Reversing the same way is also a successful day.
