Things to do in Warrumbungle National Park
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with NSW National Parks
Most first visits revolve around Fans Horizon plus Whitegum Lookout, with Breadknife & Grand High Tops as the fit day. Overnight Dark Sky nights are a different product. Western Split Rock, Bluff Mountain and Mount Exmouth are not add-ons. Do not try to collect every track on a first visit.

Day one rule
Pick one primary experience (usually Fans Horizon or Whitegum). Do not collect Breadknife, Bluff and a midnight shoot on day one.
Weather / energy bail-out
Whitegum, Canyon picnic or the Visitor Centre beat a forced Grade 4 in heat or wind. Bail-outs are competence.
Overnight / Dark Sky filter
If the night is the product, keep the daylight walk short. Official Dark Sky tours are NPWS-only. The 21–23 Sep northern Uringery/FFPA close is off the alerts page as of 25 Sep 2026.
- 1
Fans Horizon
First visit · Grade 3 · same start as Breadknife
The honest first walk from Pincham — 3.6 km return, Grade 3, 1000+ steps to Balgatan lookout. Breadknife, Belougery Spire and Crater Bluff views without a six-hour ridge.
- 2
Breadknife & Grand High Tops
High volume · Grade 4 · 5–6 hrs typical
The flagship Grade 4 day from Pincham — 14.5 km loop, 5–6 hours. Steep steps, no water on track, named bail-outs. Fit walkers only. Not a first-hour add-on.
- 3
Whitegum Lookout & easy days
Easy · photos · families
Sealed 0.5 km Grade 1 orientation view, Canyon picnic and Wambelong Nature Track. The right call in heat, with mixed mobility, or after a late arrival.
- 4
Dark-sky stargazing
Milky Way · camping · astronomy
Australia’s first Dark Sky Park. Camp Blackman or a Coonabarabran night, red light, winter clear skies. Official Explore the Dark Sky is NPWS-only. The 21–23 Sep northern Uringery/FFPA close is off the alerts page as of 25 Sep 2026.

Volcanic geology & photography
Geology · photos · GeoTours
Plugs, dykes and silhouettes. NSW GeoTours app for official geotrails. Dawn and dusk from Whitegum or Fans Horizon — stay on signed ground.
- 6
Wildlife, birds & spring wildflowers
Year-round · dusk caution · no feeding
Eastern greys, wallaroos, emus — distance is respect. Never feed. Wedge-tailed eagles and (when you are lucky) turquoise parrots. Spring flowers along Spirey Creek and Fans Horizon.
- 7
Western Split Rock & longer days
Hard · western / long days · not first visit
Belougery Split Rock is a short, steep Grade 4. Bluff Mountain and Mount Exmouth are full-day products — not Breadknife add-ons. Status-critical; Trip Intention and PLB for the long days.
- 8
Official Discovery programs
Official · guided · NPWS only
Walk on the Wild Side, Explore the Dark Sky and Junior Ranger when scheduled. Book only on official NPWS channels — not affiliates. Remaining 2026 dates live on the Tours page.
