Itineraries
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
These plans respect drive time, heat and one-walk honesty — no fake “do everything from Sydney in a day” checklists. Include realistic road timing from Coonabarabran or Dubbo, a heat buffer, and peak-crowd notes for Camp Blackman. Pick the plan that matches your group, then open it for a full timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free day-walk & dark-sky planner anytime.
Every itinerary defers to NSW National Parks for track status and alerts. Hard walks only appear where the plan names them — and only when official status is open.
Which plan fits you?
- First-visit Fans Horizon — mixed-ability volcanic views from Pincham; Coonabarabran base.
- Breadknife day — Grade 4 flagship for fit parties; Dagda Shortcut bail-out.
- Weekend Camp Blackman — official camping + one signature walk + a dark-sky night.
- Dark-sky overnight — Milky Way focus; camp or Coonabarabran bed.
- Backcountry self-reliant — walk-in camps, Trip Intention, PLB, no marked hut-to-hut track.
If two plans both “sound good,” pick the shorter one. You can always upgrade on the ground; you cannot invent daylight on the highway home from Sydney.

One night (plus easy daylight)
Dark-sky overnight (astronomy focus)
Stargazers, photographers, winter clear-sky trips
Time the trip for a dark window, sleep in Coonabarabran or a booked park camp, keep daylight walking short, and treat the night as the main event. Official Dark Sky Park — limited reception still applies after dark.

2–4 days (self-reliant)
Self-reliant backcountry (multi-day)
Experienced walkers linking High Tops camps
There is no hut-serviced multi-day like the Overland Track. Walk-in camps (Balor Hut, Ogma Gap, Dows, Hurleys, Burbie, Gunneemooroo, Danu and others) can link Grand High Tops, Bluff Mountain and Mount Exmouth if you book, register and carry everything.
