Warrumbungle walks & trails
Guide updated · grades and open status change — verify NSW National Parks
Start with a clear Fans Horizon vs Breadknife choice — same Pincham carpark, very different days. Distances, grades and times below are planning ranges — always confirm on NSW National Parks and local alerts. Heat, fire danger and track status change.
Decide before you lace up
- Easy lookouts: Whitegum Lookout (sealed, wheelchair-friendly), Wambelong Nature Track, Tara Cave (viewing platform closed for repair — snapshot 25 Sep 2026).
- Best first walk: Fans Horizon from Pincham — Grade 3, volcanic views, same start as the flagship.
- Flagship day: Breadknife & Grand High Tops — ~14.5 km Grade 4, 5–6 hrs, Dagda Shortcut bail-out.
- Harder / longer: Bluff Mountain, Mount Exmouth — self-reliant, Trip Intention + PLB, not a casual add-on.
Stacking two hard walks is the classic first-visit failure mode. Pick the table row that matches energy and heat, then open the full trail guide for getting-there detail.

Trails FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Which walk should first-timers do?
Most first-timers start with Fans Horizon from Pincham (about 3.6 km return, Grade 3) or Whitegum Lookout if they want sealed and easy. Breadknife & Grand High Tops is a full Grade 4 day for fit parties — not a default first hour. Always verify track status with NSW National Parks.
Can I stack the Breadknife and Bluff Mountain in one day?
Usually a bad plan. Breadknife & Grand High Tops is already a 5–6 hour Grade 4 commitment. Bluff Mountain and Mount Exmouth are separate long days. Pick one hero walk and protect reverse time and water.
Are distances and grades guaranteed?
No. Figures on this site are planning ranges from public materials. Always [VERIFY] live distance, grade, time and open/closed status on official NPWS pages and local alerts.
