Where you start
Pincham carpark
Same Pincham start as the Breadknife walk. NPWS advises visiting the Visitor Centre first to register your name, pick up a free trail map and get route advice.
How to get there
- Sealed John Renshaw Parkway to Pincham, just past the Visitor Centre turn-off. 2WD on the main access.
- Vehicle day entry applies — [VERIFY] $8. Self-drive only. No useful public transport.
- Visitor Centre first (4261 John Renshaw Parkway) — NPWS explicitly asks you to register your name, pick up a free map and get route advice.
- This is not a second walk after a morning Breadknife loop. One hero only.
- Screenshot local alerts in town. Official heading Open (snapshot 25 Sep 2026). The 21–23 Sep northern Uringery/FFPA close is off the official page.
How to do it (step by step)
- Visitor Centre first: map, advice, Trip Intention, free PLB. Carry 2 L+ water minimum (NPWS); 3 L is more honest in heat.
- Follow Pincham trail / Spirey Creek, then the High Tops network past Balor Hut. Dagda Shortcut is an option if the goal is the Bluff summit faster.
- From Dows Camp the summit trail zig-zags, becomes less distinct over rocky outcrops and grass trees. Navigation attention required.
- Lunch on the rocky summit, then reverse to the main track, past Ogma Gap and West Spirey to Pincham. Overnight at Balor or Dows only if booked.
- Hard turnaround at Dows if time, weather or water fail. Completing Grand High Tops or Dagda is the correct shrink.
Who this walk is for
Choose Bluff Mountain when the group is already comfortable on long Grade 4 days and wants the summit NPWS calls the park’s best views. Official: 17 km loop, 7–8 hours, steep sections and loose rock (re-checked 2026-08-15). High fitness required. No wheelchair access.
It is not a slightly longer Breadknife. The extra hours live on a less-distinct summit spur after Dows Camp. Mixed first-timers belong on Fans Horizon. Fit first-timers who still want a flagship day belong on the Breadknife loop, not here.
What to expect
You share early country with the Breadknife / Grand High Tops walk: Pincham, Spirey Creek, the ramp past the Breadknife, Balor Hut. Then you keep going. The summit trail starts straighter, then zig-zags over rocky outcrops among stunted trees and grass trees. Birds of prey ride the cliff face.
From the rocky summit you can pick out Mount Exmouth, Tonduron Spire, Mount Naman lava flows, Bluff Pyramid and the western plains. The view is the prize. The descent is the bill.
Logistics
Pincham start/finish. Visitor Centre registration / advice is explicitly recommended on the official page. Trip Intention and free PLB hire. Book Balor Hut or Dows if you split the walk overnight.
Carry more water than pride. NPWS says at least 2 L; heat and 7–8 hours argue for more. Sturdy shoes, topographic map or GPS, hat, sunscreen, snacks, suitable clothing. There is no drinking water on track.
Limited reception is official. Emergency+ only works if a device can reach 000. A PLB is the honest backup. Leave a reverse window with a reliable human.
Reverse and shrink options
If time or weather fails before the summit spur, completing the Grand High Tops loop (or Dagda Shortcut return) is the correct shrink — not an off-track bash at the cliff.
Hard turnaround time at Dows Camp. The summit is worthless if the descent is by headlamp with an empty group. Injury: stay on signed tracks and use the PLB. Do not invent a descent around Bluff’s cliff face.
Pairing
This is the only hero of the day. Do not stack Fans Horizon as a warm-up. Do not add Mount Exmouth. A booked camp or Coonabarabran bed is the recovery, not another ridge.
If you wanted the Breadknife close-ups without the extra summit hours, walk the Breadknife loop instead. If you wanted the range high point at 1206 m, that is Mount Exmouth from the western side — a different long day.

Extra tips
- High fitness and a sense of adventure — official language, not marketing fluff.
- Topo map / GPS as NPWS suggests. The summit spur is less distinct than the Breadknife highway.
- Views from the top include Mount Exmouth, Tonduron Spire, Mount Naman lava flows, Bluff Pyramid and the western plains.
- Do not stack this after Fans Horizon “to warm up” unless the group is unusually strong and the start was pre-dawn.
- Winter days are short; summer heat argues for a dawn Pincham start, not a 10am departure.
Often paired with Breadknife / GHT— only if energy and weather allow.

Bluff Mountain FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can we do Bluff Mountain after the Breadknife the same day?
No. Bluff already includes most of that country plus a 7–8 hour Grade 4 commitment. Pick one. Completing Grand High Tops or Dagda is the shrink if the summit spur is too much — not a second named walk.
Is the summit track as clear as the Breadknife?
No. NPWS describes a less-distinct trail over rocky outcrops after Dows Camp. Carry a topo map or GPS and stay on the signed line. Off-track is not a shortcut.
Should we hire a PLB?
Yes for this walk. Free PLB hire at the Visitor Centre plus a Trip Intention Form. Limited reception is official. You need coverage to call 000.
