How to do it (step by step)
- Follow the signed 1 km loop from Canyon picnic area along Wambelong Creek through a small sheltered gorge.
- Watch for kangaroos, emus, possibly koalas; brown falcons and red-winged parrots in official notes. Never feed wildlife.
- The track rises steeply for a valley / Split Rock vista — still a short walk, still not flat.
- Rock-hop the creek only when sensible. Reverse if water is up. Complete the signed loop back to Canyon picnic.
Who this walk is for
Choose Wambelong Nature when you want wildlife and creek character without driving to Pincham stairs. Official: 1 km loop, Grade 3, 30–60 minutes (re-checked 2026-08-15). Ideal for Camp Blackman / Canyon picnic groups.
NPWS lists no wheelchair access. The loop is short and still has a steep rise and creek rock-hopping. Sealed and access-friendly is Whitegum Lookout.
What to expect
From Canyon picnic area the signed loop follows Wambelong Creek through a small sheltered gorge — rock outcrops and volcanic spires on the skyline. Brown falcons and red-winged parrots are the official bird notes.
The track then rises steeply for a valley and Split Rock vista. Kangaroos, emus and (if you are lucky) a koala in the canopy. Kangaroos loaf in shade at nearby Camp Wambelong in the heat — give them room.
Logistics
Canyon picnic area has toilets and picnic facilities when open. Vehicle day entry applies. Carry water and a hat even at 1 km. Limited reception is official.
After rain, treat the creek crossing as a go/no-go. There is no prize for wet socks on a nature loop. Visitor Centre is the nearest desk for current notes.
Pairing
Classic easy day: Canyon picnic + Wambelong Nature + Whitegum Lookout. That is a complete park day for mixed mobility and heat. Do not add Fans Horizon “because we have time.”
Camp Blackman is the nearby vehicle camp when booked via NPWS. Park entry is extra. Dark-sky nights pair better with a short daylight walk than with a Grade 4.

- Kangaroos often rest in shade at nearby Camp Wambelong in the heat of the day — give space, never feed.
- No wheelchair access (NPWS). Whitegum is the sealed easy product.
- Pair with Whitegum the same day if energy remains. Do not add Fans Horizon stairs after a “just a nature track” promise.
