Where you start
Mount Exmouth signed trailhead (western / Burbie–Danu side)
Western trailhead system associated with Camp Burbie / Danu Gap approaches. Confirm the exact start, parking and status on the official page. Not a Pincham roadside lookout.
How to get there
- Western park access via John Renshaw Parkway. Self-drive. Vehicle entry applies — [VERIFY] $8.
- Unsealed feeder caution after rain on Coonamble / Gulargambone approaches. 2WD on the sealed spine from Coonabarabran.
- Confirm the signed western trailhead (Camp Burbie / Danu Gap approaches) on the official page — not Pincham.
- Visitor Centre first for Trip Intention, free PLB hire, a map and current status. Official heading Open (snapshot 25 Sep 2026). The 21–23 Sep northern Uringery/FFPA close is off the official page.
How to do it (step by step)
- Trip Intention + free PLB hire. Topo map / compass or GPS as NPWS suggests. 2–3+ L water, hat, sunscreen.
- Expect kangaroos, wallabies and wallaroos; koalas possible along The Boulevarde between Camp Burbie and Danu Gap — never guaranteed.
- Summit vegetation is sparse (mallee eucalypts). Lunch on top, then reverse — or continue via the High Tops link at Ogma Gap only if that join was the planned day.
- Limited mobile reception. Early start. Hard turnaround time.
- Returning via West Spirey Creek is a traverse — it needs a car shuffle or an overnight booking, not hope.
Who this walk is for
Choose Mount Exmouth when the group wants the 1206 m range high point and a quieter long Grade 4 than Pincham weekends. Official: 17 km return, 5–7 hours (re-checked 2026-08-15). Fit, self-reliant walkers only.
It is not a Pincham roadside lookout and it is not Bluff Mountain. Do not attempt both. Mixed first-timers belong on Fans Horizon. Fit first-timers who want the postcard dyke belong on the Breadknife.
What to expect
A long return through varied vegetation and basalt remnants of the original volcanic shield to a 360° summit. Kangaroos, wallabies and wallaroos are common. Koalas are possible along The Boulevarde between Camp Burbie and Danu Gap — never guaranteed. Turquoise parrots in small flocks around the same woodland in official notes.
Summit plants are sparse — mallee eucalypts that can take the exposure. Spring wildflowers live lower down (hyacinth orchids, nodding greenhood). Pack lunch. The view is the prize; the 5–7 hours are the bill.
Logistics
Western start, not Pincham. Trip Intention and free PLB hire are on the official page for a reason. Carry 2–3+ L water, hat, sunscreen, topo or GPS. There is no summit kiosk. Limited reception is official.
If you intend to return via West Spirey Creek after the Ogma Gap link, you have changed the day into a traverse. That needs a car shuffle or an overnight High Tops booking, not hope.
Reverse and the Ogma link
The default is out-and-back on the signed Exmouth track. Hard turnaround time that protects daylight on the western descent. Winter is cold on an exposed 1206 m summit (park record −9 °C).
The official link to Breadknife / Grand High Tops at Ogma Gap is a planned join — overnight or a two-car day. Do not “see how we go” toward Pincham with one bottle and no booking.
Pairing
This is the only hero of the day. Burbie Canyon is a possible short extra only if you finished early and the group is still honest. Split Rock the same afternoon is a bad plan. Bluff Mountain is a different long day from Pincham — pick one summit.
Recovery is a booked western camp or a Coonabarabran bed, not a midnight Dark Sky shoot.

Extra tips
- Turquoise parrots in small flocks around The Boulevarde in official notes — binoculars earn their weight.
- Spring wildflowers lower down (hyacinth orchids, nodding greenhood).
- This is a different long day from Bluff Mountain — do not attempt both.
Often paired with Burbie Canyon— only if energy and weather allow.

Mount Exmouth FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Does Mount Exmouth start at Pincham?
No. Western trailhead system associated with Camp Burbie / Danu Gap approaches. Confirm the signed start on the official NPWS page. Pincham is the Breadknife / Fans / Bluff start.
Can we link to the Breadknife walk?
Yes at Ogma Gap — as a planned traverse or overnight, not a surprise. Returning via West Spirey needs a car shuffle or a booked High Tops camp. The default day is 17 km return to the western trailhead.
Is this the same as Bluff Mountain?
No. Bluff is a 17 km Pincham loop with a less-distinct summit spur. Exmouth is the 1206 m range high point from the west. Both are full Grade 4 days. Do not stack them.
Nearby stays & gear (optional)
