Self-reliant backcountry (multi-day)
2–4 days (self-reliant) · Best for: Experienced walkers linking High Tops camps
Guide updated · verify NSW National Parks the morning you go
There is no hut-serviced multi-day like the Overland Track. Walk-in camps (Balor Hut, Ogma Gap, Dows, Hurleys, Burbie, Gunneemooroo, Danu and others) can link Grand High Tops, Bluff Mountain and Mount Exmouth if you book, register and carry everything.

Multi-day travel here is self-reliant. Book walk-in sites on the official NPWS system. Some remote sites have a booking fee even when camping is otherwise unpriced (Burbie: no camping fee, $6 booking fee — NPWS, re-checked 15 Aug 2026; [VERIFY]).
Fuel stoves preferred — [VERIFY] current fire and stove rules. Climbing / backcountry registration has appeared in older brochures — confirm current requirement at the Visitor Centre. Historic climbing restrictions at formations like the Breadknife — VERIFY.
Water is scarce on tracks. Limited reception is official. Free PLB hire is for day walkers too; remote parties should treat communications as a core packing item.
This is not a hut-serviced product like Tasmania’s Overland Track. There is no operator walking your food in. Official heading Open as of 25 Sep 2026 snapshot. The 21–23 Sep northern Uringery/FFPA close is off the official page.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NSW National Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Weeks before
Book every night, name every bail-out
Do not leave walk-in camps to chance on a long weekend. File Trip Intentions. Collect hut keys if Balor Hut rules require Visitor Centre pickup — [VERIFY]. Carry paper map plus offline files. Name exit tracks and a weather abort.
Night before / morning
Visitor Centre, PLB, last water
Desk hours 9am–4pm daily, closed Christmas Day — [VERIFY]. Trip Intention, free PLB hire, current alerts, hut key if required. Vehicle $8/day still applies. Fill every bottle in town — there is no ridge tap.
Day 1
Pincham to a High Tops camp
Treat day one as the Breadknife approach with a booked night at Balor, Ogma or Dows — not a summit-bagging race. Heat and steps still apply with a heavier pack. Post-2013 trees: do not camp under large limbs in wind.
Later days
Bluff Mountain / Exmouth only if booked and honest
Longer days toward Bluff Mountain or Mount Exmouth are separate products with their own grades — [VERIFY] official pages. The Ogma Gap link is a planned join, not a surprise traverse. Closed or unsigned = turn around.
Exit
West Spirey or booked vehicle pickup
Exit via a named track to a named car park. Tell your emergency contact you are out. Return hired PLBs to the Visitor Centre during desk hours — do not leave a beacon in a hut.
After
Town food and an honest debrief
Coonabarabran for food and a shower if you did not book a vehicle camp. Note water, heat and which camp you would book again. Do not invent a second multi-day “because we’re already fit.”

Parking & access tips
- Leave a car only in signed long-stay / trailhead parks — confirm with Visitor Centre.
- Do not block Pincham turning space.
- A western Exmouth start needs a second car or a booked traverse — say that before Day 1.
- Valuables come with you. Do not leave bags visible at Pincham for two nights.
- Screenshot bookings and alerts — no reception on the High Tops.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Unbooked nights on High Tops camps
- Inventing a hut-to-hut “tour” that NPWS does not operate
- Bluff + Exmouth as impulse add-ons
- Fuel-stove improvisation on a total fire ban
- Leaving a hired PLB in a hut or at the car
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Experienced walkers who already book remote sites
- Parties who will carry water, stove and a PLB
- Groups with a named exit and an emergency contact
- Not first-timers who want a serviced hut-to-hut tour
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If any night is unbooked: shrink to a day walk or a vehicle camp
- If heat, fire danger or alerts scrub the ridge: abort to Pincham
- If water is lower than the plan: turn around — the summit is optional
- If the Ogma / Exmouth join was not booked as a traverse: do not invent it
What success looks like
- Every night booked, every exit named, PLB returned
- One honest High Tops overnight — not a bagged-peak circuit
- No off-track descents and no illegal camp
